One of the most important archaelogical sites of Sicily is the Valley of the Temples just outside Agrigento, with six Greek temples, including the Temple of Concordia, one of the best preserved Doric temples of the ancient world. Not far away are the ruins of Selinunte, not as complete as those of Agrigento but in a beautiful setting in rolling countryside overlooking the sea.
There are also some superb beaches in this area, notably Porto Palo and Lido Fiore near Menfi and those near the white cliffs of Scala dei Turchi. For completely uncontaminated, wilder beaches try the Torre Salsa nature reserve with 13km of sand dunes.
Wine lovers can try two great wineries - the Baglio Oneto in Marsala country and the Foresteria Planeta Estate near Menfi.
