Inghams Italy Advent- 22 dicembre
Mon Dec 2014
Venice has a magic aura that makes it different from any other city you will ever visit. The lagoon, the quiet canals, the hidden churches and the grandeur of Piazza San Marco are always a surprise for the eye when you arrive here, even if it’s for the tenth time.
In winter, the city looks even more enchanting. When the snow covers the gondolas, the statues and the private gardens, everything becomes more silent. On other days, when the mist envelops the city, the lagoon look even more mysterious. In Venice you will notice how it sufficient to walk five minutes away from Piazza San Marco, to find incredibly peaceful corners.
However, the very heart of Venice is always vibrating with life and energy. In December beautiful Christmas lights are hung over the canals, with an extra romantic effect. The little shops have magnificently decorated windows and dazzling goods on sale.
It is indeed mesmerising to visit Venice during the festive season . There is also a special regatta organised every year, called ‘Regatta of the Santa Clauses’. Main rule: being dressed like Santa Claus. This race is very popular and the contestants compete using a typical Venetian rowing boat called sandolo. The paddle method is also a traditional Venetian one, the voga venetaalla velesana. The rower is peculiarly in a standing position and uses two crossed oars. Clearly Santa does not use a sleigh when he is in Venice!
