So, what do you know about Italy?

Fri Dec 2015

So, what do you know about Italy?

To many, it’s the Mediterranean boot which toes a dismembered Sicily towards Sardinia and on north westwards towards the coast of Spain. To others, of which I am unashamedly one, Italy is a land of legend, of love, of fashion, fur and most importantly, of unadulterated gastronomical delight. But do we know Italy? The real Italy? The Italy behind the pizza, the pasta and the proscuitto?!

Are you aware, for instance, that Italy holds 7,600kms of stunning coastline, that it borders France, Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia or that it offers some of the most varied and stunning landscapes of any one country on earth? Where else marries snow capped mountains with fertile plains, vast and stunning lakes, idyllic coastlines and honeymoon islands and yet remains overlooked by a fame for coffee and a penchant for carbs?

Each year more than 45 million tourists flee to Italy to bask in what is undoubtedly, one of the most fascinating, diverse and indulgent cultures in the world and each year, so many more return.

If you haven’t made it over yourself, here are 10 things you probably still don’t know about this phenomenal country, and if you have, well you probably still won’t know them… but you’ll almost definitely want to go back!
