Genoa

The Serene Maritime Republic of Genoa was at the height of its power in the 12th and 13th century and  its nickname is 'the supbert one' due to its glorious past and historic landmarks. Today it is a fascinating city; at the same time a bustling port but also full of grand architecture and impressive landmarks. Head down to the port area to see Europe's largest aquarium, or connect with the city's maritime past through the excellent National Maritime Museum. The old city that fans out from the port up to steep hillside is a confusing labarynth of alleys called caruggi which are peculiar to Genoa. Largely residential they are non the less fun to wander around. Perhaps try and time your visit to coincide with one of the 'Rolli Days', held several times a year when they open the doors to the beautiful 16th century Rolli Palaces along the Strada Nuova which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
