Ravello

Ravello has some of the most stunning views over the sea in the whole Riviera. Perched on the side of a hill, it is a real Mediterranean jewel. Once part of the Amalfi Maritime Republic, in recent times it has been visited by artists, poets and musicians. In the summer, the Ravello Music Festival offers plenty of concerts in a lively atmosphere and a beautiful scenery.

You can admire one of the most celebrated views from the Infinity Terrace of the historic Villa Cimbrone and wander around its gorgeous gardens. Villa Rufolo inspired Wagner’s setting for the second act of Parsifal and is mentioned in Boccaccio’s Decameron. The town has an interesting Duomo (Cathedral) with a white façade and many other historical buildings.

The patron saint of Ravello is Saint Pantaleon. His celebrations last for two days, between 26th and 27th July. People pray and wait for a cruet with Saint Pantaleon’s blood to liquefy. The cruet is kept in Saint Pantaleon’s chapel and taken out only for this festivity. After the ritual, a lively parade invades the streets of Ravello and people can enjoy concerts and fireworks.

During the summer months, Ravello hosts a major music event, the Ravello Music Festival. The village of Ravello becomes an idyllic setting for classical music recitals, captivating jazz performances and much more. Can you imagine a music stage on the top of a cliff, with only the deep blue sea as a background to the music performance? This is exactly what to expect in Ravello.

Scala is a delightful village perched on a hilltop at 300 m above sea level. At the time when Amalfi was a powerful Maritime Republic, Scala had the function of a fortified settlement with defence purposes, just like Ravello. The incredibly green and traditionally rural surroundings are perfect for a relaxing holiday. Scala also has good links to Ravello and the other centres of the Amalfi Coast.
