Jewels of the Veneto 2018

The Veneto in the northeast of Italy is of course well known as home to the inimitable city of Venice, but the whole region was once under the mighty Serenissima, meaning there are many more gems to be found here, such as the architectural treasures of Vicenza and the Giotto frescoes of Padua. Our tour is based in the charming walled town of Cittadella which is also handily linked by rail to Venice and other places of interest. We include an optional trip to Venice by train and a day at leisure when you may wish to explore further afield, perhaps to the nearby town of Bassano del Grappa, or just relax in the hotel's gardens. Hotel Filanda is located just a short walk from the centre of Cittadella, a small town surrounded by impressive medieval walls. This historic hotel was once a silk workshop and has large windows that flood the building with light and look out onto the lovely garden.

Itinerary

Day 1 | Arrive on your chosen flight to Venice and transfer to the hotel. Transfer time is about one hour. As we offer a range of regional flights, not everyone will arrive at the same time but you will meet up with your Tour Leader and fellow travellers in the evening.

Day 2 | A short drive away lies the pretty town of Asolo, known as 'the town of a hundred horizons' for its wonderful mountain views and was loved by its famous residents Freya Stark and Robert Browning.
After our visit to Asolo we visit the Villa Maser, another of Palladio's architectural masterpieces.

Day 3 | The nearby city of Vicenza has a wealth of neo-classical treasures by the 16th century architect Andrea Palladio. A walking tour of the centre will visit the Teatro Olimpico and also takes in other important buildings from the outside, such as the Basilica. After free time for lunch you will board the coach again for a short journey to Palladio's famous villa, La Rotonda, which so influenced 17th century British style.
Please note that the programme may be modified to fit in with the opening days of the Villa La Rotonda.

Day 4 | There is a chance to relax today and explore the delights of medieval Cittadella, or perhaps join your Tour Leader for an optional trip by train to Venice to see one of the most fascinating cities on earth (cost of train and water bus not included).

Day 5 | The beautiful city of Padua lies less than an hour's drive away and today we'll visit with a local guide the famous Scrovegni Chapel to see the amazing 14th century frescoes by Giotto. There will then be time to visit the historical city centre and the Basilica where St Anthony of Padua lies buried.

Day 6 | Fruity, sparkling Prosecco has become very popular lately and so today we learn a little more about it with a visit to the vineyards of the Valdobbiadene region which is the heart of the Prosecco district. The landscape is beautiful with ancient villages, churches and impressive abbeys surrounded by splendid vines. We visit the cellars of a winemaker and enjoy wine tasting and a light lunch of typical Italian cuisine.

Day 7 | Today you have another opportunity to relax in Cittadella or you could choose to take a train to visit the nearby town of Bassano del Grappa, where you can visit the grappa museum and see the covered bridge.

Day 8 | Transfer to Venice airport for your flight home or continue with your holiday by enjoying one of our great destinations such as Venice, Florence or Lake Garda.
