Rome truly matches the hype – and then some! The capital city’s wealth of history is awe inspiring but it’s not all monuments and museums. Rome is a thriving contemporary city full of stylish restaurants and sophisticated hotels. Further south, the lively city of Sorrento perches dramatically above the Bay of Naples, surrounded by incredible coastline. The colourful city has a cosmopolitan vibe which combined with Rome makes for a thrilling holiday of a lifetime.
Inghams Italy recommends:
Where to stay? Hotel Victoria, 4*
Our guests’ favourite hotel in Rome, and it’s easy to see why. The welcoming Hotel Victoria is full of character. Established in 1899, the walls are decorated in 18th and 19th century paintings and the rooftop terrace offers stunning views across Rome.
What to do?
Whether you’re reliving the La Dolce Vita by visiting the Trevi Fountain, which unfortunately we can’t recommend you dance in, or gazing up at the magnificent ceiling by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, there’s so much to see and do.
The Colosseum is an iconic monument to Rome’s ancient heritage, but equally impressive is the Pantheon. An architectural masterpiece, this Roman temple from 125AD survived to the present day by being converted into a Christian church.
For a fascinating insight into the 20th and 21st century face of Rome head to the Cinecittà si Mostra, Italy’s premier film studios. A permanent exhibition explores Italy’s incredible contribution to the world of cinema from the artistic films of Fellini to the Spaghetti Westerns such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Where to stay? Hotel Continental, 4*
The colourful Hotel Continental with its stunning outlook over the Bay of Naples, is a great place to relax. Indulge in a cocktail at the Caruso Bar or unwind by the pool surrounded by citrus trees, you’ll be amazed that the main square is only 5 minutes away.
What to do?
Wandering the cobbled street of Sorrento’s old city centre on a warm summers day is an enjoyable way to while away an evening. The streets teem with lively and cosmopolitan cafés and restaurants, giving Sorrento an amazing atmosphere.
This colourful city is an ideal location from which to explore the Bay of Naples. Travel by train to Pomepeii and Herculaneum to explore the incredible archaeological sites, rich with artefacts. You’ll be overwhelmed by the stories they tell.
As you admire the views across the bay, which is dominated by Mount Vesuvius, make sure you indulge in the spectacular cuisine. Fish dishes are a local staple and let us not forget the pizzas, which originated in Naples.
How to get around?
Getting from Rome to Sorrento couldn’t be easier. High-speed trains depart Roma Termini for Sorrento at regular intervals throughout the day and the journey time is less than 3 hours. We can arrange for a taxi to pick you up directly from your hotel and the station providing you with virtually door-to-door convenience.
